Key Characteristics and Biology
  • Appearance: They are pale or white, often with brown, orange, or beige coloring at the base of their cerata (gill filaments), which comes from digested Aiptasia.
  • Size: They range from microscopic larvae to adults of roughly 3/4" to 1.5 inches.
  • Diet: Exclusive consumers of Aiptasia (glass anemones).
  • Behavior: Generally nocturnal or cryptic, hiding in dark crevices and feeding on Aiptasia.
  • Lifecycle: Hermaphrodites that lay spiral-shaped egg clusters. They can reproduce within 47 days, creating self-sustaining colonies to manage infestations.
Reef Aquarium Usage
  • Natural Predators: Often used when chemical treatments or fish (like Peppermint shrimp or Filefish) fail.
  • Reef Safe: They do not harm coral, fish, or other invertebrates.
  • Survival: If all Aiptasia are consumed, they will starve within 5–7 days.
  • Threats: They can be eaten by some fish, including wrasses, butterflyfish, and peppermint shrimp.
